Day 12: A perfect day out in Leicester

A couple of months ago I wrote a post called Ten Things To Love About Leicester, which is my adopted hometown.  I pretty much covered all the highlights of the city, so today I thought I'd do something a bit different and write about how I'd spend my fantasy perfect day here.

The day would begin with a sunny stroll down New Walk - a gorgeous Georgian-era pedestrian walkway - and into the city centre.  We'd stop at the Exchange Bar for a morning cuppa, before going to St Martins Square and browsing the independent shops there.  I'd find the perfect record in Rockaboom, a bargain dress in one of the many vintage shops, and stock up on sewing supplies at Button Boutique.

Walking to the west of the centre, past the old city walls through the historic district, we'd then follow the canal north until we reached the National Space Centre.  This is a wonderful interactive museum, perfect for whiling away a few hours learning about science and space (what can I say?  I'm a total physics geek).

Back into town, and a late lunch (with a few pints, of course!) at Firebug. Their menu has recently expanded to include even more vegan options, which is perfect for The Boy, and I love the relaxed atmosphere, indie playlist, and cheap food and drink.

Finally, we'd end the day with either a film at Phoenix (the independent cinema), a comedy show at The Cookie, or a musical at Curve theatre, before heading for the number one best place in Leicester: my bed!

  1. I really want to go to the National Space Centre, didn't realise you could walk there from Leicester city centre!

    1. Yep, from the middle of the city centre it's, at most, a 20 minute walk. A nice one too - through Abbey Park and along the canal towpath.

  2. Sounds like an excellent day in Leicester! I've never eaten at Firebug, I'm usually only there when they've stopped serving food - I'll have to give it a go! x

    1. I'll readily admit to being obsessed with Firebug, I just love it. The food is so good, and excellent value. We are usually to be found there on Saturday lunchtime... problem is that the temptation to have a few pints with your food is very high!

  3. Love New Walk. Used to walk down on way to work every day and particularly lovely, early morning in the Spring.

  4. The thing I miss most about living in Clarendon Park is that wonderful walk into town. The walk from Aylestone is far less scenic!

  5. Leicester looks like one of those UK places that I should visit in the near future! What a lovely post :)
